It’s ego and personality he created to protect how damaged he is underneath it all. What we’ve seen from Amos so far is that defense. Then, that thing gets yanked away, and all of a sudden, you’re an open nerve you’re an open wound. We start to build a part of our ego or personality around protecting these things. “We have deep sensitivities we have deep vulnerabilities we have things that happened to us in the past that were like this will never f**king happen to me again. I think that being a part of Amazon has really allowed the show to be what it wants to be.”ĭespite Amos’ sometimes volatile nature - Chatham hasn’t been shocked that many Expanse fans can see themselves in his character. It’s harsh because this is the reality in the world that they’re in. Just as long as it’s honest and it’s not for the sake of shock value. “Once you take those constraints off, you tell the honest reality of what this is, and let it be as harsh as it needs to be. ![]() “Telling a story with the demands of broadcast television and the challenges that come with that, you always have to round off the edges because of advertising,” he reflected. The Expanse’s move from Syfy to Amazon Video has shifted how Chatham is able to approach his character- namely, the darker shades of his personality that he’s able to portray on screen. That wasn’t always there, that was built and was earned.” Amos is just there because of the love of the family around him and the connection that he has. He’s like, ‘Let’s just do our thing over here.’ But Holden’s always dragging them into things. He’s not as concerned with all this macro politics and what’s going on with the world. From who Amos was from the beginning and now seeing his relationship with the crew and with Holden and his relationship with Naomi - that is his family. “Amos has the most tightly controlled outer presence, but inside it’s a hurricane. “I think he has changed,” Chatham revealed. Though he still has a dark side, fans of The Expanse have certainly seen Amos grow and expand into the man that he is now. If these things happened to me, what would this manifest? Since I’ve been living with Amos for so long, it’s insane to see the sets and things that I’ve seen in my imagination come to fruition. I read that every season, and that’s the foundation that I’ve built off of. “There’s a novella called The Churn, and it’s just specifically on Amos’ character. “In Season 4, you really understand why Amos is the way he is and what he’s like when that’s gone and what that was covering,” Chatham explained. We had the opportunity to speak with Chatham about Amos’ dark side and why things are about to get even more interesting for him.
